We spend so much of our lives thinking about what belongs to us. Our homes, our possessions, the things we’ve worked for and the things we hope to have.
But how often do we stop to consider whose we are?
I. THE BEGINNING — OUR SHARED HUMANITY
Before there were borders to separate us, names to distinguish us, or colors by which we describe one another, there was humanity.
Acts 17:26 speaks of God making all nations from one. Look at the faces around you. Different countries, different languages, different shades of skin—and still, human beings.
We are one race, the human race.
What might change if we looked at one another through that understanding?
II. THE BELONGING — WHOSE ARE WE?
“The earth is the LORD’s, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein.” — Psalm 24:1 (KJV)
We say, “my house,” “my car,” “my money.” And for the years we’re here, we care for these things, use them, and sometimes share them. They make life easier. They give us comfort.
But possession is not the same as permanence.
If the earth and everything in it belong to God, perhaps the question is not only what we have, but how we regard what has been placed in our hands.
III. THE INTENTION — THE THOUGHTS TOWARD US
Think of parents awaiting the birth of a child. Before they ever hold that baby, they may already have hopes for the life ahead. And when they finally look into that little face, their hearts are full of possibilities.
They teach. They guide. They try to plant something good. Yet as that child grows, the child makes choices of their own. The parents’ hopes do not guarantee the path the child will take.
