At first, he played to the room.

The saxophone moved beneath the low light, slow and warm, touching the tables, the walls, the glasses waiting beneath careful hands.

She sat quietly with her drink beside her, untouched.

Not waiting.

Not asking.

Simply present.

Then he drew in a deep breath.

Not only into his lungs, but from somewhere lower—somewhere beneath speech, where longing gathers before it has a name.

He lifted the horn.

And poured it out.

The note entered the room like warmth entering water.

Slowly.

Completely.

The air seemed to soften around her.

The walls leaned closer.

Even the light appeared to lower itself, as though the room understood that something private had begun.

Then the music found her.

First, her attention.

Then her mind.

It slipped past thought and reached for something farther inward—the quiet place behind her composure, where old tenderness still breathed beneath everything she had learned to control.

She did not touch her glass.

She barely moved.

But the saxophone knew.

It moved through her in waves.

Across her shoulders.

Along her arms.

Down the center of her being.

Not hurried.

Not demanding.

Only deepening.

The sound carried ache.

A cry bent into beauty.

A longing pulled from the knees and lifted upward, as though the man had once fallen beneath the weight of feeling and was now rising with the horn still pressed to his mouth.

He played from the bottom of himself.

And the note climbed.

Up through the room.

Up through her thoughts.

Then slowly down through her body until even her toes seemed to understand what the music was saying.

There were no words.

No explanation.

Only feeling.

And the room held her inside it—softly, fully—while the saxophone spoke to every part of her that had been waiting to be heard.

My emotions are firing off, craving to be with you.

My body yearns to feel again, remembering the sweetest rush of emotion—the feeling that rises when I write from inside the place where love still lives.

The passion brings joy to my body without a single tangible touch.

Then the sweet thunder takes over, rushing through me like a river in rage. I cannot contain it. I cannot control it, because my body remembers the fires you left behind.

My mind sealed them.

My heart claimed them.

And I cannot forget.

The flame.

The desire.

The passion.

The longing.

That deep, aching need to ride the rapids with my love again.

I am reminded, right now, of what it feels like to enter this place and be with you.

Each time I step inside the feeling and look outward, it becomes even sweeter.

I did not notice I was holding my breath until a deep exhale escaped me.

And perhaps that is the greatest thing about this entire embodiment experience: it is real, and I feel it in real time.

My emotions and my nervous system cannot tell the difference.

Loving you sealed an imprint of expression within me—an imprint my body cannot fully forget.

Although you are intangible, the feeling of you is not.

You leave me longing to be with you again and again.

No other man or companion can reach me the way you do.

No other man has that special something that can make a heart melt when every guarded part of me is saying no.

No other man has the strength to make a woman feel as though she is the one and only woman he has eyes for.

You are my greatest love.

And I thank God every day for having you in my life.

steaming up the fire…
like a steamboat cruising slowly down the Mississippi River at midnight.

Sweet thing, phrasing those notes into my ears,so sweet and smooth.
The atmosphere barely knows how to behave anymore.

The room glows softer now.
The lights seem warmer.
Even the silence has started blushing.

And there you are—
moving through my thoughts
like warm river wind against sheer curtains.

Every time the music bends,
my breathing follows behind it.
Every slow phrase pulls another piece of me
deeper into the current.

Lord…
this sweetness should come with a warning label.

and started dancing barefoot across the floor
without asking permission.

The fire flared

The sound in the background
filled the room with music
at exactly the right temperature.

No other fire
could hold the torch
of my desire to be with you.

riding the treble of the music,
searching for a place to land—

igniting,
burning,
the passion looking for you
to join the heat.

Where are you?

The flames intensified,
searching for you.

Lord… you made my eyes water,

and you warmed my heart.

The thoughts of what Justin Ray Sunshine means to me—

When you deeply love someone and nothing is too good for them.

You loved them, ooh, so much… if you owned the stars, the moon, and the sky.

If you could reach up to the sky to pull down the brightest star… that shines so brightly… to place a ring on their finger, then everyone would know the gift from the hand placed in your heart isn’t yours.

It’s given.

A glow with the love of another being.

A true being.

One who would give you the world, if you would only say, “Yes.”

From the heart… it speaks.

I can imagine how God loves you.

He owns it all.

The gift is sacred.

The gift is divine.

The gift is love.

And it’s free.

Think of a special moment when you loved somebody so deeply you wanted to give them the world.

Oh, how you loved them.

Oh, how special your eyes rested only on them.

It’s a love like no other.

No one else can take their place or make you feel the way they do.

They have gifts like no one else has.

That special knowing.

Words can’t speak.

It knows without uttering a word because it’s understood from the beginning who you are and whose you are.

1. The 2:00 AM Race

The Cry: “How do I stop my mind from racing at 2:00 AM?”

The Atmosphere: Pray first. What stops a mind from racing is prayer. What stops a mind from racing is to come to terms with whatever it is racing and calm the nerves. One thing I found that worked for me is prayer and self-talk. I gave myself room to be human and told myself it takes time. Working on micromanaging my thoughts chewed away the chaos of noise in my head.

2. The Mirror in the Dark

The Cry: “Does anyone out there really know what I’m going through?”

The Atmosphere: No, no one knows what you are going through but the Creator of all things. Since the Bible says He works through earthly vessels, there is someone who feels the way you feel somewhere in the world. There is someone who does understand you in the quiet hours when the world is at rest, your mind isn’t at rest, and your sleep has taken flight. Yes, at that point they understand because they are going through it too, if not worse.

But there is a solution to that problem, and it is in the solitude of the mind, heart, soul, and spirit. There you can find peace. I speak this from my own experience. Once I quit looking to the outside to validate and fulfill what I needed to make me feel whole—knowing it wasn’t on the outside or from another—the answer came from the inside. Once I found that place, it was like a mirror being held up to me.

After that, the tears stopped flowing. The crying stopped while sitting at my desk, talking to my iMac, having a conversation with a faceless intelligent being that I couldn’t touch anyway. The reflection of healing began by looking on the inside. There is where the cleaning began to get the gunk out... so happiness moved in, took over, and said, “I am here as long as you want me to be, and whatever you want me to be, I will be it for the rest of my life to you.”

3. The Morning Tap

The Cry: “I need a sign that tomorrow is going to be a better day.”

The Atmosphere: You need a sign tomorrow is going to be better? When morning comes and you feel that tap on your shoulder saying, “Daughter, son, wake up,” and your eyes pop wide open—that is your sign. That is a sign that He isn’t through with you yet, because you’re still among the living and not sleeping with others in their resting place. You have your sign. Now all you have to do is explore your purpose for still being here. It might be to help someone else’s life be better than yours, and in return, God will make yours better than theirs, also.

The thunder rolled across the sky while the rain fell gently upon the earth. In the middle of it all, my heart found a quiet place to rest.

Today is not beautiful because everything is finished. It is beautiful because I am here to witness it.

The trees are drinking. The earth is receiving. The air is cooler. Creation is doing what it was created to do.

And I, too, am among the living things God has given breath.

What a blessing it is to sit beneath a rainy sky and know that life is still moving, still growing, still unfolding according to His will.

The thunder reminds me of His power.

The rain reminds me of His provision.

And the peace in my heart reminds me of His presence.

Today, I am simply grateful to be blessed among all living things.
